After delivering a whopping 21 puppies, an elderly black lab is on the road to recovery. Despite the impressive litter size, her story is bittersweet as she deals with the challenges of postpartum pain. Thankfully, a compassionate community of animal enthusiasts is rallying around her, sending well wishes for a speedy recovery.
The black lab, believed to be around seven or eight years old, was swiftly transported to Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine for specialized care. Upon examination, veterinarians determined that she required an immediate emergency C-section to ensure her health and wellbeing.
As the veterinarians worked tirelessly to save each puppy, the cost of their care continued to climb, leaving the shelter in a difficult financial situation. Turning to their community for support, they have managed to raise around $20,000 so far.
Heartbreakingly, all of the puppies passed away on October 26. Despite efforts to save them, half were stillborn and the rest were too premature to survive. It is believed that the mother dog may have been impregnated by multiple male dogs, although there is no evidence of her being from a puppy mill or given hormones.
While the shelter is pursuing legal action against the owner of the dog, they are facing challenges due to Iowa’s inadequate animal protection laws. Nevertheless, they are determined to seek justice for the tragic loss of the puppies.
Veterinarians are now focused on helping the senior dog on her road to recovery after a difficult birth. Encouragingly, she is already showing improvement just a few days post-delivery. While still considered fragile, her condition has notably improved. The team at ISU veterinary hospital plans to gradually reduce her pain medication and start introducing water to her routine. Once fully recovered, she will be discharged from the hospital and placed with a foster family to continue her healing process.
It pains me to see an animal in such anguish. How could someone let this poor creature endure such suffering? Let’s send our prayers for her ongoing recovery and for those responsible to face the consequences.
