When Emily Blythe stumbled upon Runt, she couldn’t believe the sorry state he was in. Not only was he terribly thin and his fur all matted, but he also had wounds on his ears and face, not to mention a nasty respiratory infection.
Seeing how much Runt needed assistance, Emily didn’t hesitate to rush him to the Lake County Animal Shelter in Tavares, Florida. There, he would finally get the care and attention he needed to recover.

Emily warmly invited Runt into her home and embraced him as part of her furry family. She happily exclaimed, “He quickly became one of my older cats. It was like he changed overnight!” Each day, Runt seemed to undergo a remarkable transformation until he emerged as a brand-new feline. He was now a content and healthy cat, whose charming personality was finally starting to show.
After settling into his cozy new home with his kitty buddies, Runt seemed completely content, and Emily was certain she had found his forever family. Despite being an older cat and FIV positive, Runt was thriving and enjoying his golden years in the loving environment Emily had created for him. At around 14 years old, Runt was described as the most laid-back and easy-going feline companion. Not letting his health issues hold him back, Runt even took on the role of mentor to new foster kittens, offering his wisdom and guidance as they navigated their way through life.
The heartwarming story unfolded when Emily welcomed two foster kittens into her home. Runt, one of her resident cats, immediately took on the role of caregiver, showing a deep and nurturing connection with the little ones as if they were his own. Emily fondly remembers a touching moment when a tiny kitten weighing less than a pound was brought home, and despite the odds, Runt stepped in as a surrogate mother, ensuring the kitten’s survival.
Among the kittens was a tuxedo cat named Dolly, who had a rough start being found in a truck’s engine block before being rescued. Joining Dolly was another rescued kitten named Reece, discovered in a shed. This unlikely pair found comfort and companionship in each other, thanks to Runt’s loving care and attention.

These two cute kittens bloomed in each other’s company; Dolly’s timid nature changed after meeting Reece, and together they found comfort in Runt’s protective presence. Runt stepped up as their guardian and nurturer, ensuring their well-being.
Dolly, who used to be timid, has blossomed into a more confident kitty thanks to Runt’s caring nature. She now eagerly seeks out his love, relishing in cuddles and belly rubs. Emily noted with joy, “She now rushes to him for attention. He’s like a second dad to all the foster kittens we’ve taken in.” Despite facing a lifetime of homelessness, Runt remains a gentle and loving feline, showing an abundance of affection towards everyone, especially the vulnerable foster kittens in our care.
